Para Kore - working towards zero waste

Established in 2010, Para Kore Marae Incorporated is a Māori, not-for-profit, zero waste organisation with a vision of oranga taiao, oranga whānau, oranga marae. Para Kore is a programme that works with Māori to increase reusing, recycling and composting of materials. It's about drawing from our tupuna values and science to guide our lives today as responsible kaitiaki (guardians).

The purpose and value of Para Kore is to educate and advocate from a Māori worldview for a world without waste. It's about designing, creating, and encouraging the use of systems that don't create any waste or recycling in the first place:

Para Kore is about:

  • Reconnecting people to Papatūānuku (Earth Mother)
  • Taking care of Papatūānuku for our future generations so that she can take care of us
  • No waste: Designing a world where we are thinking about what happens to stuff after we've finished using it
  • Collectivising communities
  • Normalising the whakaaro (consideration) of managing our own waste as tangata (people), to make sure we are looking after our atua Māori (Māori Gods) - Ranginui (Sky Father) and Papatūānuku (Earth Mother)
  • Leaving something positive for your mokopuna (grandchildren)
  • Being a good tupuna (ancestor)
